Change – it’s Hard!

“The only certainty in life is change”

Change is what makes life unpredictable, no matter whether we consider it good or bad. And quite often it’s going to happen anyway, whether you want it to or not. It’s a bit like the passing of time!

So how do you cope with those changes that you didn’t necessarily ask for, but will happen anyway? It might be cliched, but I find deep breathing and counting to ten before you act or speak can be very helpful!

I’ve written a little bit about change before, but that was all about changing habits and choosing to make positive changes in your life.

Of course, changes that you initiate will usually have a positive outcome. You’re not likely to choose to make a change that will have a negative effect on your life!

But it’s how you deal with other types of change that is the real character building stuff. I’m talking about changes in your life that you haven’t chosen to make, but have to deal with anyway. And what about the unexpected situations that occur from the change itself?

It can be really hard to stay positive when you’re in a situation that you have no control over and the outcome is dependant on someone else doing what you need or want them to do. Trust me, as someone who is a bit of a control freak, the last few weeks have been really difficult for me!

Me

We recently moved into our beautiful newly built home and as wonderful as that sounds, I’m only just starting to actually enjoy it now, three weeks after we moved in!

I didn’t expect the move to be perfect, but I forgot about having to rely on service providers. And how it can seem like an interminably long time when you’re waiting for someone else to do something for you.

I also forgot about the Chinese Whispers that happen when you speak with several different customer service representatives, and they tell you something different each time!

And the actual time you spend on the calls, being put on hold every time that they have to check something. I nearly went over my limit on my phone plan because I had to make so many lengthy calls to various service providers.

Don’t get me started on how much extra data I had to buy just to use the internet until we were finally connected. As I said earlier, it’s character building, because you have to decide how to deal with the inevitable anger!

For me, the best thing is to acknowledge it and then get over it. Not easy, but I know that it’s a lot healthier than bottling things up or hanging on to negative feelings and emotions.

And I rely on my support network to allow me to vent and keep me on track. My poor hubby has had the patience of a saint lately and I’ve been sooooo grateful for my PT sessions!

If you’ve been reading this so far and wondering what it has to do with health and fitness, here’s the take away: regular exercise not only keeps you fit and feeling good physically, it helps you stay sane when you can blow off steam with a hard physical session.

We also had to improvise quite a bit during the first week of our move as it took a week to get the gas connected, which meant no hot water or cooktop!

It’s times like these when you appreciate and make the most of what you do have. Luckily, our oven is electric and we have a microwave, so we were still able to eat well. As for hot water, we managed by showering at the gym!

Me & Missie

Now, as if all of that wasn’t enough to deal with, changing gyms was the other big thing that came up unexpectedly. My PT decided on a career move and changed gyms, so I had another decision to make.

I’ve trained with Nathan for 3 years, so I decided to move with him but keep my options open to go back if I didn’t like the new gym. I’m a big believer in back up plans; for me they allow me to try new things with a kind of safety net.

Well as it turns out, after giving it a good go for a few weeks, I really didn’t like the new gym. And after writing a list of pros and pros, the only thing I could list that the new gym had going for it was Nathan.

So the bottom line was that wasn’t a compelling enough reason to stay!  I (sadly) said goodbye to him and closed that chapter of my life, but started a new one at the ‘old’ gym.  Right now I’m very grateful for my back up plan.

Two more of my favourite sayings are:

“Never say never”

and

“Don’t burn your bridges”

because you really never know what’s around the corner!

So what’s the point that I’m making here? That it’s okay to go back sometimes, as long as its for the right reasons and it keeps you moving forward in the long term – just don’t expect things to be exactly the same, because they won’t be and you’ll only be disappointed.

I’m going back to the old gym and I’m excited about it because I’m looking forward to a new start with a different trainer.

You can handle any change or difficult situation by planning ahead and keeping the important things constant – eating good food, exercising and spending time with your loved ones.

Life really is all about what you make of it and its too short to waste time being in a bad mood!

So I’m going to finish with my all time favourite quote:

“What doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger”
